Our Values
As Stoics, we embrace the Two Pillars of Stoicsm:
1. The Dichotomy of Control (or the Dichotomy of Control and Indifference): This pillar is central to Stoic philosophy and emphasizes the fundamental distinction between things that are within our control and things that are outside of our control. Stoics assert that we should focus our energy and attention on what is within our control, which includes our thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, desires, and actions. Everything else, such as external events, other people’s actions, and the natural world, is considered indifferent or beyond our control. By accepting what is outside of our control with equanimity and focusing on what is within our control, Stoics aim to find inner peace and resilience.
2. Virtue as the Highest Good: Virtue, often defined as moral and intellectual excellence, is the ultimate and highest good in Stoicism. Stoics believe that living a life of virtue is the key to a fulfilled and meaningful life. This pillar encompasses the four cardinal virtues: wisdom (practical wisdom or insight into the nature of things), courage (the ability to face challenges and fears with fortitude), justice (treating others with fairness and kindness), and temperance (exercising self-control and moderation). Virtue is the only true good, and pursuing it is the primary goal in Stoic ethics.
These two pillars provide the foundation for Stoic philosophy and guide practitioners in their pursuit of wisdom, resilience, and a life of eudaimonia, which is the Stoic concept of flourishing and true well-being. By understanding the dichotomy of control and embracing virtue as the highest good, Stoics aim to lead a life in accordance with reason, ethics, and inner tranquility, regardless of external circumstances.
